I bought this phone in purple - in support of pancreatic cancer awareness and because I wanted a quad band phone.
It is nice to look at, has a nice "feel", but the features are basic.
There is very little you can do with it in terms of the telephone aspect of it. I guess it is great for photos, especially since it has the photo editor. The screen is the best feature on this phone. It is big and performs well even in direct sunlight (a plus for the camera users). After 6 photos which I transferred from my Nokia I was told that the memory was full. My Nokia 6320 has loads of photos and music on it.
With regard to ringtones, you'd probably have to buy the memory card, or stick with what they have on the phone. I was not too enthusiastic about the ringtones the phone came with. I like naturelike sounds and classic ringtones. I read a review which said that Sony was targetting the younger folk (I am 45), so that accounts for the type of ringtones and graphics which are embedded in the phone.
The slide mechanism is sturdy, as is the keypad. The slits which represent the select and menu buttons can be a tad difficult if you have long nails, or large fingers (again the target was young folk).
The downsides are that the vibrating mechanism is weak and for some reason unknown to me, after 45 minutes of talking on it, the phone cuts off.

Expect the unexpected with the Sony Ericsson S500i slider phone, which features unique external light effects and visual display accents. Hidden illumination appears to highlight a certain event and the keypad glows with energy when the slim slider is opened. The display themes can also change when you want--with the seasons, as day turns to night or when the weekend begins. Featured in a Mysterious Green, the quad-band S500i is nicely slim at just 14mm (0.55 inches) thin and it boasts a brightly colorful 2-inch LCD with support for 256K colors. Other features include a 2-megapixel camera, multi-format digital audio player, Memory Stick Micro (M2) expansion, and Bluetooth stereo music streaming.
This unlocked cell phone can be used with a GSM network service provider and it provides quad-band connectivity (850 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 1900 MHz). Powered by GPRS/EDGE Class 10 (Enhanced Data for Global Evolution) technology, this phone makes information exchange a breeze by offering immediate mobile connectivity. It does not come with a SIM card, and it requires that you provide a SIM card for usage with your selected service provider.
The S500i brilliant 2-inch display has a QVGA resolution (240 x 320 pixels) with 256K colors, perfect for its emphasis on beautiful imagery. It comes with three themes to choose from: Clarity, Day & Night, and Everchanging. The latter changes the phone's animated wallpapers and illuminated color menus as day turns to night and as the months change on the calendar.
The S500i phone offers a full-function Walkman digital audio player that's compatible with MP3 and AAC files. Other Walkman features include a flight mode that lets you keep listening to tunes with the phone's network connectivity turned off, and Disc2Phone software for easy transfer of song files between phone and PC.
This phone provides Bluetooth version 2.0 wireless connectivity with EDR (enhanced data rate), and includes profiles for communication headset, handsfree car kits, and audio/video remote control. With the A2DP Bluetooth profile, you can stream your music to a pair of compatible Bluetooth stereo headphones. You can connect your laptop (either via Bluetooth or wired USB) and enjoy dial-up networking--surf the Internet, send email, and access files from a server.
The built-in 2.0 megapixel camera captures stills and video--and playback of video or still pictures is only limited to the memory card size. Picture effects and custom screensavers, backgrounds, and themes can be setup to fit your personality. It provides support for PictBridge technology so you can print your photos without the need of a PC (either using USB or Bluetooth). And the S500i makes it easy to send snapped photos directly to a blog or an online photo, complete with text.
The phone also ships with a built-in email client with support for POP3 and IMAP4 protocols, while the included Access NetFront Web Browser allows you to surf full HTML web sites. It also supports RSS feeds, allowing you to use your phone to view up-to-the-minute news and other content from selected Web sites and blogs. Just subscribe to the feed and let it come to you. Support is built in for sending and receiving text, video, graphics and sound via messages.
The phone also supports the SyncML PC synchronization standard. This means the phone can be used with the included Sony Ericsson Sync Station software, which lets you synchronize your Microsoft Outlook calendar, contacts, notes and tasks on your PC with the phone.
Other features include:
Up to 1000 contact entries, each with five number fields
Java support for online and offline 3D games (preloaded games include PacMan and Ms. PacMan)
USB 2.0 wired connectivity with mass storage capability
PIM functions including calendar, tasks, notes, alarm, calculator, stopwatch, and timer
T9 text entry technology
72-chord polyphonic ringtones and MP3 ringtones
Digital audio file formats: MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+

Vital Statistics The Sony Ericsson S500i weighs 3.3 ounces and measures3.9 x 1.8 x 0.5 inches. Its 900 mAh lithium-polymer battery is rated at up to 9 hours of talk time, and up to 370 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the 850/900/1800/1900 GSM/GPRS/EDGE frequencies.

Sony Ericsson X2 Xperia Silver Unlocked GSM QWERTY Keyboard, Quad-Band,8.1 Megapixel Camera, Video-/MP3-Player, WLAN, Bluetooth, USB, microSD Slot Review

The Xperia X2 specs are impressive. Sony has crammed a lot into this little phone. I've used it for a little over a week.
Pros:
+ I like the form factor. But I appreciate business-like phones with no unnecessary do-dads. Smaller than my Nokia N900.
+ The keyboard is wonderful. I buy a new phone every 6 months and most have keyboards. This one is the best. Numbers are not across the top qwerty row, but rather they are clustered in a phone key pad arrangement. You'll immediately get used to it and makes for a lot less stretching of your fingers. Enter key is very large for a phone.
+ Headphone jack. Stereo speakers. Everything sounds great. Works with my Nokia, Jabra, and Plantronics stereo bluetooth headsets.
+ Home screen has several "panels" which change the home screen completely. These changes can be based on an event like time of day. I like the SPB shell panel the best, but then I'm used to SPB and I like densely packed home screens.
+ I installed Opera Mobile, Mocha VNC, WMWifi, and CorePlayer which are essentials for me. All work.
+ Phone calls are quite clear even on speaker phone.
Cons:
- Have to remove the battery frequently because the phone locks up.
- Came with a Euro wall adapter for the charger. No USA adapter.
- Performance on AT&T 3g network is poor. Internet services hang and often the phone has to be powered down to recover. All of the smartphones I've owned have significantly better internet performance on AT&T 3g.
- Media Player couldn't play any of my mobile video collection (divix, mp4, mpg1). It only recognized .wmv and was unable to play that without serious stutter and hang.
- CorePlayer, of course, could play everything in my mobile video collection, but it strained to play anything but the mpg1 files (400x240 var bit rate). Dropped frames and video tearing were the most common problems on divix and mp4.
- Email does not alert when the phone is in standby or locked. Only when you wake it, does it discover e-mails have arrived and then it plays the sound and updates the screen with the e-mail count. For me, it must alert on any message just like it does with an incoming call.
Conclusion:
Yesterday, I ordered an HTC HD2. The Xperia X2 is unusable for me. When the HD2 comes in, I'll give the Xperia away to a colleague who just makes calls, but goes through a lot of phones because his toddlers play with them and drool eventually kills the phones.

Sony S-544 8 GB Walkman Video MP3 Player (Violet) Review

Sony S-544 8 GB Walkman Video MP3 Player (Violet)

When searching for a new mp3 player the trail always leads me back to Sony. Its more about overall quality then brand loyalty. Over the years Sony's Walkman line has gone the distance and more. After picking up the Sony S545 16GB for myself, I bought this model for my little one.
The S-544 8gb Walkman brings it on with a crisp, color enhanced 2.4" LCD screen that is easy on the eyes. At 2" x 4" x .4", it comes in a bit larger then its older cousin. A larger body undoubtedly is required to provide support for the external speaker system. The speakers won't get confused with my home system anytime soon but they do provide an excellent source. With headphones on, this mp3 player delivers a cornucopia of sound. Missing but not that noticeable is the noise reduction feature. The on board equalizer can be tweaked to one's own preferences or users can choose one of the six presets.
The Navigation pad located directly under the screen is a breeze to operate. Three controls are located on the right side of the unit. One locks in the controls. The second one allows for easy switching from speaker to headset. Volume is the third control. The standard headphone jack and a USB port can be found on the bottom of the unit. The detachable flip out stand is an okay feature that allows for easy standing on my desk or shelf top. I would have preferred that it was permanently mounted.
The S-544 supports mp3, mp4, AAC, AVC, WMV, WMA, and PCM. PCM is Sony's version of WAV. It pairs well with Napster. Rhapsody is a no go. Downloading my playlists from Windows Media Player was a breeze without the usual hiccups associated with older mp3 players. Photo display is crisp but unlike my older Walkman, wallpaper display is a no go.
The built in FM tuner picked up all ten of my stations. With auto scanner functionality, thirty preset slots are available. The FM radio is crystal clear when using the headset as an antenna. The alarm and timer features are a nice add on. This model also has an impressive on board microphone located on the bottom of the unit. There are three voice settings. Voice playback quality was excellent. Battery life has always been biggie with Sony. On a full charge, I got almost a full thirty five hours of music.
This Sony mp3 player comes packaged with a USB cable, flip stand, ear buds, installed operating manual, and the standard one year warranty. Body finishes for the 8GB model include; black, red, pink and violet. The 16GB unit comes in a black or red body.
Economically priced, this latest edition to the Walkman line is a durable and reliable product that simply delivers. Easy to use and loaded with features, the Sony S-544 is a prime time performer.
