HP 2159M 21.5-Inch HD LCD Monitor Review

HP 2159M 21.5-Inch HD LCD Monitor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I wouldn't call myself very tech savvy, but you don't have to be to know that you purchased a good lcd monitor. I really can't compare it to other hd monitors since this is the only one I own. I previously owned a 17 inch lcd, which I used for typical computer tasks and gaming. I'll give my pros and cons on the HP 2159m:
Pros: -Full HD, HDMI and DVI
-1920x1080 resolution, very high for a display under $300.
-Wide viewing angle is great for movies.
-Integrated speakers
-Great for gaming, I used my Xbox 360 on it. You get up 1080p.
-VGA is actually very good. I tried my PC(1920x1080 60Hz) and
it impressed me.
Cons: -Speakers don't have such great sound.
-The glossy screen is a bit reflective, but not a big problem.
Once you own this monitor, you will find many things you like about it and some things you don't. But what can I say? I didn't buy the monitor for the intergrated speakers, I use my own speakers. The glossy screen is a bit reflective in dark backgrounds, I hardly notice it at times. They're just minor things. If your thinking of upgrading, do it. It's worth the $200+ you'll pay.

Samsung 2333SW 23-Inch Full HD Widescreen LCD Monitor Review

Samsung 2333SW 23-Inch Full HD Widescreen LCD Monitor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am really happy with the purchase of this monitor. I haven't seen too many reviews on it, so I was bit skeptical at first when purchasing it. It is the perfect size, 5ms response time, HDCP compliant, 16:9, and has a 20000:1 contrast ratio. One of the things about monitors in this size is the 16:9 viewing ratio - Some are not, and if you are interested in watching HDTV on your monitor then you'll have black bars at the top and bottom of the screen, which I personally don't like. Pairs well with a Blu-ray player and HDCP compliant video card. I'm using it for all sorts of tasks - video and picture editing, blu-ray movies, internet, etc. I'm not a gamer so I can't comment on that end of it. All in all, a great value for the size and quality.
One note on the stand assembly: Use a bit of olive oil and place it around the rubber ring on the inside of the stand insert. This helps the stand slide into place much more easily, and will not hurt the monitor as long as you use the olive oil sparingly.

Panasonic Expandable Digital Cordless Dect 6.0 Phone System (KXTG8232B) Review

Panasonic Expandable Digital Cordless Dect 6.0 Phone System (KXTG8232B)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Overall, this phone set is terrific. It features a bright color screen and a sleek glossy black look. (Once you go with a color screen, it's hard to go back) The base station is surprisingly compact. Call clarity is excellent. Speakerphone is plenty loud. You can even check your answering machine through the handset! Panasonic's usual mess of small buttons has been streamlined somewhat to reduce confusion.
A slight gripe is that while Panasonic gives you a color screen, it doesn't really use it to its full potential. You have a choice of *three*, count 'em, three wallpapers. And that's it! All but one are pretty tacky.
A bigger gripe revolves around the answering machine. First of all, Panasonic removed the talking Caller ID that was standard on almost all their previous models. Secondly, there is no on-phone notification that someone left a message on your machine. The *only* indication is a hard-to-see blinking red light on the base station. There is no audio notification that there are new message either (many other phones beep when there's a new message). So unless you are frequently near the base station (which I'm not), you may have messages and not know it.
So in a nutshell:
PROS
Great sound
No WiFi/Bluetooth Interference with DECT6
Compact, sleek styling
Backlit keypad
Good speakerphone
Answering machine operation from handset.
CONS
No audible or visual new message alert on handset
Limited customizability (few wallpapers/ringtones)
No talking caller ID.

The Panasonic KX-TG8232B DECT 6.0 Expandable Digital Cordless Phone System with Two Handsets uses the latest DECT 6.0 (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications) technology for outstanding range and clarity. It operates on the 1.9 GHz frequency for less interference from household items such as wireless networks, keyboards, and microwaves, and is less susceptible to eavesdropping. Two handsets are included and up to four additional handsets can be used with the base unit without any need for wires or setup.
An all-digital answering system is built into the base and features flash memory that holds 16 minutes of recording time. The phonebook can hold 50 entries and the Caller ID can be linked to the phonebook so that a certain color gets flashed depending on who is calling. Call-waiting Caller ID shows you the name and number of an incoming call even while you are already on a call. Digital duplex speakerphones are built into the back of both handsets for clear hands-free conversations.

I love this phone cover/decal. it is so cute without all the bulk of a normal shell phone cover, and protects from scratches. I will definitely get a new one when this one's time is up. although it doesn't cover up the sides, I have had close to zero problems with the reception issue. however, I will be getting a bezel cover to help with what problems I have had.

Alpine iDA-X100 Digital Media Receiver Review

Alpine iDA-X100 Digital Media Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've made my way through a bunch of different car stereo head units over the years, but ever since the iPod has become the de-facto standard, I've wondered why nobody made a decent iPod-friendly one. Alpine's iDA-X100 is probably the first usable product for this purpose (its predecessor, the X001 was essentially a beta-tester version of the X100, and by many accounts, not ready for prime time). Sure, there are a slew of crummy FM transmitter adapters, and many stereos have auxiliary (Aux) inputs, but those are merely kludges.
The X100 displays the artist, track, and album of the currently-playing song. It lets you quickly scroll through all your artists, tracks, and albums, so you can find the song you want fast. All this works very well, and does so while charging your iPod in your glove compartment or wherever you want to put it. Don't have an iPod? No problem - just put your tunes on any inexpensive USB memory key and plug it in!
The X100's bright screen rivals a typical iPod screen, although is definitely a step down from my iPhone. The volume knob, which also affords navigation through your collection, is large and comfortable. In all, a solid design designed for use while driving. (This means that, unlike the iPod itself, you can use without having to look at it.)
So, why not five stars? First, the screen is too small. With the X100's large, easy-to-read font, there's only room for 6-7 characters. Listening to the White Stripes? You'll only see "White S" on the screen. Sure, 'long' text scrolls back and fourth, but that's a poor design for drivers who need to keep their eyes on the road. If I had designed this unit, I would've moved the big knob all the way to the left, and made the screen twice as wide. As it is, the left side is wasted anyway.
Second, when a song begins playing, the text rolls out on the screen very slowly, like it's being typed one letter at a time from a typewriter. It can take 10-15 seconds before everything appears, making it a stupid design for a display that must relay all its information at a glance.
Third, the 'Back' and 'Next' buttons are small and flush with the surface of the unit; you can't use the big wheel to go to the next track. These buttons should be more prominent, perhaps akin to the slick lever on Sony's excellent CDX-C90.
Fourth, the X100 can be set to have blue or red backlighting. But the red is a harsh, dark crimson that looks terrible next to the amber lighting on my dashboard. Why no soft amber/orange setting? Who knows.
Fifth, the X100 can display cover art from the current song (provided you've loaded one into iTunes), but, for some reason, it displays a very low-resolution image. This is particularly glaring when you hit the Display button to hide the text and display only the cover art; it just looks bad. I have high-res cover art in my collection that looks great on my iPhone's screen, but the X100 just doesn't use it. Perhaps a firmware upgrade will fix this?
Finally, and it may sound like nit-picking, but the X100's customizable wallpaper feature is poorly executed. You have two trendy patterns from which to choose, or you can download additional patterns from Alpine's awful website (which was last updated in 2005, by the way, and only works on Internet Explorer). Although Alpine has gone out of their way to prevent customers from creating their own wallpaper (for reasons that completely elude me), you can do as I did and download the free, third-party xndconverter.exe utility and create your own APN files. With my own photo as the wallpaper, the X100 head unit actually now looks nice in my car, despite the lack of a matching backlight color.
As for the sound quality (which is supremely important, despite the fact that I've spent most of this review talking about the interface), I'd rate it a solid 'B.' The sound is pretty good, but lacks the richness and warmth of the gold standard, the Sony CDX-C90 (even when playing the very same MP3s). Perhaps the PXA-H100 IMPRINT add-on accessory will improve the sound, but I haven't tried it yet.
To sum up, this is THE unit to get if you want to listen to your iPod/iPhone in the car, but don't expect it to be perfect. I'd give it only three stars if there were competition, but since it's the only worthy game in town, it earns four.
(Note: At the time of this writing, Alpine also makes the ida-x200 and ida-x300, but these are lesser models, both without the X100's bright color screen.)

Kenwood DNX6140 6.1-Inch Wide Double-DIN In-Dash Nagivation with Built-in Bluetooth USB/iPod Direct Control/DVD Receiver Review

Kenwood DNX6140 6.1-Inch Wide Double-DIN In-Dash Nagivation with Built-in Bluetooth USB/iPod Direct Control/DVD Receiver

I had this unit profesionally installed in my Porsche Cayman and the custom installation is a very good fit. The navigation system is very easy to use - if you've had a garmin (that is what it is based on), you pretty much do not need to read the manual - it is very intuitive and accurate. I've driven about 2000 miles with it and I like the large bright display - it is easy to change directions and detour on the fly. It does not have voice commands, but the touch screen is easy to use.
I have also used the bluetooth with my Razr phone and have not encountered the problems stated in the earlier review. The microphone is placed near the rearview mirror and only the front speakers come on when I'm talking on the phone - the unit shuts off any music that you might have playing. I use the touchscreen to dial a number and it works well - the folks at the receiving end have no problem hearing me.
There is also an ipod adapter that is in the glove compartment - once hooked up all controls are on the touchscreen - it is easy to use and works well. If one puts in a DVD / CD that takes precedence over the ipod unless you instruct the unit otherwise. I leave the unit to power up when starting the car and it automatically shuts off when the engine is off. I haven't used the XM stations as I do not subscribe to that service but the FM stations pull in fine using the standard antenna that came with the car.
All in all this is a very good unit and I am very happy with it.

Motorola AT&T Pay-As-You-Go Cell Phone - C168i Review

Motorola ATandT Pay-As-You-Go Cell Phone - C168i
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Well, my phone that came with my service plan is.. well.. its now a paper weight (darn razrs!!) I didnt want to spend another 100+ on a phone that wil just break, then i stumbled upon these gophones, they are from 19.99-99.99 at best buy and work perfectly with my AT&T monthly subscription SIM card, so its just a crazy cheap phone.
The battery life is AMAZING, its rated 9 hours, when i first bought it i opened it in the store and turned it on, it had 1 bar. It wasnt for another 3 hours untill i got home to charge it, and it still had the same 1 bar of battery life. I also talked a good 25 minutes too.
VERY durable, i love the battery back, its not one of those slide ones (like some Sony phones), and its not one where you just push a button (like the RAZR). its a combination, you press the butten and then slide, it works REALLY WELL so there is very little chance you will break/lose the cover.
came preloaded with 3 games for me, this cool space invader style game, a soccer game, and this weird mole game that is my personal favorite. Came with a TON of actually decent tones you can set as your ringtone.. unlike the RAZR which came with a horrid selection.
it also came with an unactivated brand new sim card. so if your like me and you just bought this phone so you can put your old sim card into it, you will get a bonus sim card that you can sell on craigslist for like 10-15 dollars, seeing that it came with one of the new 3G cards.
my only real complaint is that the keypad is really cramped, but its still easily usable, but you still get the feeling that its cramped, and my phone only came with 3 preloaded images to set as my wallpaper, and at times the call quality is a little shakey, but it rarely happens and when it does it goes away very fast... but for 30 dollars! thats a fraction of a price than the cheapest upgrade service plan phone. ----
I really doubt anybody will actually read this edit, but it is definitely worth a mention. I have had this phone since august (its Feb. 11). I hope dropped it countless times, this phone WILL NOT BREAK. Seriously, I've tried.
I take horible care of this phone. I wanted to test its durability (and show off to my friends that my 20 dollar phone is more durable than your 5,000,000,000 dollar one) As demonstrations I've thrown it at trees, walls, concrete sidewalk, I've thrown it in the snow... hell I've even tossed it on the concrete and invited my friends to join me in a game of soccer with it. No joke.
I didn't just do this once, but several, several times. The worst that has happened to it is the battery-cover snapped off and the battery fell out, all I had to do was put the battery back in, snap on the cover and turn the phone on.
After about 4 months of treating it like that I did the same thing, actually just today (Feb. 11th). I chucked it at the concrete ground, the battery/battery cover flew off (as usual) but to my surprise when I turned it on I had a small black bar through the screen, but even more surprising is that it still works perfectly, everything does.
It amazes me how poorly I've taken care of this phone, if I had done even 1/16th of the things I did to this phone to my old RAZR I can assure you it would have snapped in half or something.
I highly recommend this phone. I'm going to buy another one soon, heck I might even pick up 2 one for an emergency replacement.

Acer AO532h-2326 10.1-Inch Netbook (Onyx Blue) Review

Acer AO532h-2326 10.1-Inch Netbook (Onyx Blue)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Acer Aspire One 532h is a lovely little netbook, for the price it is fantastic but like all things it isn't perfect. Let's begin shall we?
The netbook is a great simplistic design, very lightweight and compact, perfect for traveling or school. It has an SD card slot for your Digital Camera, etc. 3 USB 2.0 ports, a VGA-out port (great if you wanna use the netbook with a projector), a Headphone and Microphone port, and a kensington lock slot (great if you wanna physically lock up your computer).
The keyboard is a chiclet key style, although this looks nice, the keyboard is forgettable, and by that I mean there is no way to physically remember what key your fingers are touching. This is definitely a shortcoming for the device.
The trackpad is pretty cool, it has your typical tracking area and vertical scroll off to the side, but what makes this interesting is Acer has bundeled software which lets you use multi-touch gestures. a two-finger swipe to the left will act like the "back" button, two fingers in a circle would be "refresh", it's nifty, but the lack of speed on some commands makes it more of a novelty.
The screen is bright and beautiful, of course at maximum brightness, its an LED screen so it doesn't use alot of battery power.
The computer comes with Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g), a built-in microphone, and a 0.3Mp camera. Although the camera's specs aren't great, it still looked good when testing with Ustream and Google Video chat.
The other thing you'll want to remember is this IS windows 7 Starter, so you do get some nice features that come with Windows 7 Home, Pro, etc. You are missing some basic functions. If you want to change the desktop background... you can't, personalize the sounds... nope. It's definitely a starter, and if you want a more "full" experience, you will have to fork out some more cash to upgrade.
The computer maxes out the processor when more than two windows are active, this makes it difficult to multi-task. One easy way to remedy this is to give your processor a break, install more RAM in the computer (1Gb to 2Gb extra of 200-pin 667MHz SODIMM RAM should suffice). The last thing is this computer is light, so light that you will find that the computer will want to tip over in your lap (not enough weight in the front), just something to mention.
So let's cover the key things I've learned...
*Beautiful LED screen
*Webcam is good
*computer is pretty powerful and gets basic tasks done quickly
*wakes up from standby in less than 3 seconds
*Battery power is great and could last an entire work day without a recharge
#Chiclet styled keyboard is forgetable and a mediocre experience
#multi-touch trackpad is sort of nice, mostly a gimmick
#computer isn't properly balenced
#you'll want to add some RAM if you expedt to get the most out of the device.

I bought my Aspire One D255-2301 at Walmart for $199. This little laptop is so great for the price. It's light, has good battery life and is a pleasure to use. I've upgraded to Windows 7 Starter, and to 2Gb of memory, and this alone has made this little guy as fast as my $1000 HP laptop.
I immediately bought a second Acer Aspire One for my grandson, and he loves it.

VTech i5867 5.8 GHz DSS Expandable Cordless Phone with Digital Answering System and Color LCD Handset Review

VTech i5867 5.8 GHz DSS Expandable Cordless Phone with Digital Answering System and Color LCD Handset
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I spent about 3 weeks scouring the internet for info on cordless phones and I settled on this VTech model, along with 2 additional handsets. The phone system has worked quite well since we got it and I think I made the right decision for us. I like the color LCD screen but I do agree with one of the other reviews stating that the digital time bar which floats on the handset screen when it is idle is practically invisible and can't be read unless you are right up to the phone. Once, we lost power in our home and the handsets could not find the base station. I removed the spare NiCad batteries from the base and then removed DC power and then put it all back together and it worked again. Amazing to me that the most recent models from the top phone makers do not surpass many of their older models; meaning, these phone models do not necessarily get better as the model numbers advance and get higher. This model i5867 was rated higher than many of VTech's newer models. Sound quality is good, not perfect, but then none of them are perfect. I'm very glad we got a 5.8 Ghz model because now I am looking to get an Apple Powerbook and Airport Extreme Base Station and I understand that these wireless devices can conflict with the 2.x Ghz phones. Only missing features for me are the ability to check the answering machine from the handset and a global address book for all handsets which is fed from the base unit. Good luck!

The i5866 from VTech is a 5.8 GHz cordless phone system with a number of handy extras, including an all-digital answering system, and multi-user expandability to eight handsets (one color-model included). The i5866 utilizes the 5.8 GHz frequency and digital spread spectrum technology to provide clear, accurate reception with less interference than traditional 2.4 GHz and 900 MHz phones. The answering machine stores up to 15 minutes of messages split among three mailboxes, while full remote operation allows you to check messages even while you are away from home.
Caller ID/call waiting compatible, the i5866 has a 50-number caller ID memory as well as a separate 50-name-and-number phone directory to help you keep track of important contacts. You can select among eight ring tones and 12 musical ringers, while the supplied audio patch cord allows you to record custom ring tones.
The full-color handset LCD comes with six preset images that you can assign to phone directory entries or set as background wall-paper, while the included USB cable and image editor software allow you to download custom images. Handset-to-handset call transfer allows you to route incoming calls to any handset registered to the system, and three-way conferencing lets you communicate with multiple parties at once. An intercom feature provides a way to communicate between handset locations, and a global page/handset function lets you speak with all handsets at once.
Additional features include flash, redial (last 10 numbers), and hold. A speakerphone on the handset combines with headset compatibility to provide hands-free communication options. The NiMH battery provides up to eight hours of talk time or up to five days on standby, while a low-battery indicator lets you know when to return a handset to its charging cradle. A handset control allows you to adjust volume levels. The i5866 also comes backed by a one-year limited warranty.

Asus Eee PC 1001P-MU17-BK 10.1-Inch Intel Atom Netbook Computer (Black) Review

Asus Eee PC 1001P-MU17-BK 10.1-Inch Intel Atom Netbook Computer (Black)
Average Reviews:

Ordered this netbook because I was looking for an n450 powered device akin to the 1005 line.
Well let me say that I'm glad I didn't spend the extra 60 bucks. This computer has everything the 1005 line has minus bluetooth (honestly, I don't think I've ever met a person who uses bluetooth) battery life (11 vs 14 hours, real world 8 vs 11 hours), harddrive space (160GB versus 250GB which is a negligible difference), display (matte screen vs glossy screen equal resolution), wireless (g vs n) and finish (matte vs glossy).
Now, that seems like a lot of differences, but all of them, save battery life, are pointless bells and whistles that do nothing to affect the performance of the computer (akin to putting a moon roof and a spoiler on a car and jacking the price up).
Battery life is the only worthwhile difference between the two models (maybe worth 60-80 bucks depending on what your plans are). It would have been nice to have wireless n, but most users probably won't notice a difference.
As far as the screen and finish go, I think matte is actually an advantage. A glossy screen is exhausting to read on in bright light. I'll never understand what the recent obsession with glossy screens is; they are murderous to the eyes. As for a glossy finish, your netbook will look like a piece of well worn packing tape after 15 minutes (big greasy fingerprints everywhere!).
I've heard a lot of people complain that the keyboard of this model feels spongy, but I think they must be typing with mallets, because the 1001p keyboard feels like every other laptop I've ever used. It does not depress in the corners or anywhere for that matter and I'm a fairly hard typist.
The first thing I did when I got this computer was clean install windows 7 ultimate and office 2003 (office 2007 being an unholy abomination; a grievous injustice perpetrated upon all of mankind). So far the netbook has been breezing through applications on 1GB ram with nary a stutter. I would highly recommend upgrading from the absolute garbage windows 7 starter, it doesn't even let you change the wallpaper and is solely intended to annoy you. Furthermore, you might as well get rid of all the asus software (it periodically generates pop-up ads asking if you want to pay for something) and just install the drivers for lan and wireless, you really don't need the others.
In conclusion (ah, high school english where would I be without you) The 1001P is a solid, surprisingly powerful little netbook with excellent design. It is more than adequate for most computing tasks short of video editing. And for 280$? Are you kidding me? How can you complain?

Panasonic KX-TG8231B DECT 6.0 Cordlesss phone System with an All Digital Answering System Review

Panasonic KX-TG8231B DECT 6.0 Cordlesss phone System with an All Digital Answering System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pros:
- Great range. Much better than the 5.8Ghz uniden it replaced.
- Very good clarity of voices during a call. No interference at all.
- Great battery life. First charge lasted 5 days of use before returning it to charge in base (home use, not office).
- Flexibility of batteries. It uses two standard AAA size Ni-Mh rechargeable batteries, which you can replace later for another brand or ones with even more capacity. Or you can have another set ready for use.
- You can group people in the directory and set an specific ring tone and display color for each group.
- Caller ID links the number calling to your phonebook names and displays both number and name calling. The uniden was suppossed to do this but never did.
- Good looking piano finish.
- Compact handset and base.
- Great looking color screen.
Cons:
- Very low customization. You can only select between 3 wallpapers. You can't add new ones. Few color options for setting the menu's colors. Those were a strong feature of the uniden.
- Only 50 number phonebook memory.
- Could add another volume bar. Volume is not low, but could have another bar for people that likes very high volume calls like me. Volume on speaker mode is great.
- ID caller takes like two rings before it displays the name calling.
- Only 18 min record time for answering system.
This is a great phone overall. It exceeds all the basic functions you expect for the dect frequency and panasonic (range, clarity, battery life). But I would rate it 5 stars if you can really customize it by adding your own wallpapers and ring tones. Also it would not hurt to have more memory for the answering machine and the phonebook.

Panasonic KX-TGA571S 5.8 GHz FHSS GigaRange Expandable Digital Cordless Handset Review

Panasonic KX-TGA571S 5.8 GHz FHSS GigaRange Expandable Digital Cordless Handset
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great home phone system. It has all the bells and whistles. You can input your own color wallpaper display, name each phone for its location, no obtrusive antenna, great quality, I could go on and on. The voice caller ID is sometimes a little strange, but having owned the previous version of it I'm used to it. You will recognize what it is telling you in very short time. I bought this system (I'm using six phones and a camera)to replace a Meridian (Nortel) system that cost four times the price. The camera monitors the front door from a window in the dining room. I can see who is at the door from anywhere in the house in full color. This is the best one line system available.

Designed to be used with KX-TG5700 series telephone systems, the Panasonic KX-TGA571S digital cordless handset uses 5.8 GHz frequency-hopping spread spectrum technology for added clarity and a stronger connection. Because it uses the 5.8 GHz frequency, the handset operates on a different wavelength with much less traffic than the 2.4 GHz technology. The result is greater security, incredible clarity, and longer range. Have a wireless computer network, or thinking about getting one? The phone system's 5.8 GHz technology will not interfere with wireless networks such as 802.11b or 802.11g WiFi.
Add Images to Your CallsThe cordless handset is designed around a 1.5-inch backlit LCD screen, providing space for images that you can upload to the phone via its USB port. This set includes a single handset, but the system is expandable to a total of eight handsets.
Put the Phone Down While You TalkWhen you've been on hold for 10 minutes, do you really need to hold the phone? Not with the handset speakerphone. Just lis10 along, and press a button or pick up when it's convenient. You'll think up other great uses, like letting Grandma and Grandpa lis10 to their new grandchild at the same time, painting your nails as you talk to your best friend, or just being able to set the phone down while you talk.
